Every once in a while, I come across an opportunity that I just can't resist. This time, we're building a cycling trip in the Andes Mountains of Colombia. Follow us for the next 10 days. Then join us this fall.
Colombia has been on my radar, but not my top 10… This past summer, I rolled out of the driveway for a quick, easy afternoon ride and was surprised and delighted to see my friends, Denise and Ross, beginning a climb in Truckee. They were rolling along with a new cycling friend, Tomás, from Colombia. We rode together for 20 minutes and talked briefly about a cycling trip in Colombia. That was all it took. I knew I was headed for the Andes Mountains in Colombia.
On Saturday, January 28, my friend, Denise and I depart for Colombia to meet Tomás for our first scout mission! We intend to offer you an incredible trip there later this year. I hope you will follow along for the next 10 days while we ride, eat, and learn about this beautiful country and its transformation over the past decade.
Colombia’s varied geography of valleys, mountains, rivers, and coastlines offers an experience unlike any other. With perfect weather year-round, practically any month is a good month to ride in the Andes Mountains, or “Cordilleras de los Andes." We will visit historical and traditional towns, sample Colombian cuisine, see a tremendous variety of biodiversity, and ride through the flower fields and coffee farms that have made Colombia famous.
For serious cyclists, the Antioquian region hosts many cycling events and is the training region for many famous cyclists currently in the international peloton, including Sergio Luis Henao (SKY), Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale), Carlos Betancur (MOVISTAR), Fernando Gaviria (ETTIX) and others. For those of you wanting a serious cycling challenge in a new venue, this is the perfect training ground.
Please follow us as we make our way through the regions around Medellín. We will be posting as often as possible and can’t wait to share our discoveries. (This will be the start of my season’s training so it may not be pretty.)
